Cold morning air smelled of salt and fresh snow. Weak sunlight bounced off the wide glacier, sending pale light over a stony beach. A short penguin shuffled toward a smooth ice ridge, wings held out for balance. Above the ridge rested a round grey pebble, perfect for the growing nest near the shore. The path looked simple, yet thin meltwater has glazed the surface. Each step slid backward, and sharp wind pressed against the bird’s chest. A tiny sprout, whose bright leaves broke through gritty ice, trembled beside the ridge.

The penguin jabbed its beak into the crust, searching for grip, yet the slope remained slick. Another gust whirled around the ledge and rolled loose snow around the bird’s feet. Suddenly, the sprout tipped, and thin brown roots lifted from the ice like tiny ropes. The bird caught one root with its beak and leaned backward. Weight shifted, the root tore free, and an unexpected clump of ice broke loose above. The grey pebble started to roll, gaining speed down the ridge. Midway, the stone struck a furry creature hiding under powder, and both skidded to the beach. The penguin slid after them, belly against the frozen surface, stopping only when its chest touched the pebble. Flakes settled again beside the silent glacier.

冷冽的晨風帶著鹽味與新雪的氣息。淡弱陽光照在寬闊的冰河上，蒼白光線灑向石灘。一隻矮胖的企鵝擺動翅膀，搖晃著靠近平滑的冰坡。山脊上方躺著一枚圓潤灰石，正好可添進岸邊正在擴建的巢。路面看來簡單，卻因薄薄融水而被覆上一層亮冰。每一步都向後滑，尖銳的風貼著牠的胸口推擠。一株微小的新芽從粗礫冰面鑽出，閃亮的葉片在冰坡旁顫抖。

企鵝用喙啄著冰殼，想找到抓點，但斜面依舊光滑。另一陣強風繞過山脊，捲起鬆雪包圍牠的腳。忽然，新芽傾斜，細細褐色的根鬚像小繩般從冰中抬起。牠咬住其中一條根鬚，身體往後仰。重量改變，那段根鬚被扯出，一塊意外的冰塊在上方斷裂。灰石開始滾動，加快速度衝下山脊。途中，小石擊中藏在粉雪下的絨毛小生物，兩者一路滑到石灘。企鵝伏腹跟著下滑，直到胸口貼住灰石才停住。雪片再次落下，靜靜覆在冰河旁。
