When the Stone Box Opened-

English 原文
Mateo balanced a narrow stone box on a low workbench behind the campus greenhouse. Lila stepped closer, wiping abundant dust from the lid with her sleeve. Dark soil, valued for its fertility, lay piled beside the bench, waiting to refill the demonstration beds. The box had been found beneath that soil. Its surface carried small ridges like cooled lava from a distant volcano. A thin gap divided the lid and the body; a hairline crack remained observable along one edge. Mateo’s goal was clear: lift the lid without breaking it. He pressed his fingers into the gap, but the slab refused to move.
Lila reached for a bright chisel lying among scattered trowels. She guided the flat tip into the gap, and Mateo tapped it gently with a wooden mallet. The lid shifted a fraction, then the chisel slipped, scraping the bench. A brittle flake broke free and dropped onto the concrete floor. They traded tools; Mateo fetched a thinner blade, while Lila wedged two fingertips under the loosened corner. Warm air rolled through the greenhouse glass, carrying the mixed smells of wet compost and iron. Outside, metal sprinklers clicked to life and kept a steady rhythm. Inside, the pair tried a second sequence: pry, pause, lift. The stone creaked but still refused to rise fully.
Light slowly faded as scattered clouds drifted gently across the panes above. Mateo braced one knee against the bench and pulled once more. The lid finally tilted enough for Lila to slip her hands beneath and guide it aside. Both expected a carved figure or bright beads; instead, the cavity held only coarse pieces of pumice, dull and gray. The lightweight fragments crumbled between their fingers, leaving fine powder on their palms. They exchanged a quick glance, then began searching the loose debris, yet nothing else appeared. Mateo set the empty lid against the frame, and Lila brushed stone dust from her sleeves. A faint drip echoed inside the bare compartment beneath the displaced lid.
