English 原文

A striped squirrel burst from the fern bed, sprinted across Sawyer’s boot, and vanished behind a mossy log. Lina gasped, her basket tilting as the creature’s bushy tail flashed once and disappeared.

A moment later a dull glint in the soil caught their eyes: a walnut-sized lump coated in grime. Sawyer scooped it up. Its weight felt inadequate for a real nut, and a faint line circled the middle. They rubbed the surface time after time, but wet earth clung to the metal. When Lina flicked water from a leaf onto it, mud slipped away to reveal copper. The two friends knelt beside a flat stone and pressed the lump against the edge, trying to pry it open. The lid refused to shift; each attempt ended with scraped fingers and a sharper chill creeping through their sleeves.

Sawyer braced the object under the stone’s lip while Lina wedged in a slender twig. The twig bent, snapped, and fell. Commitment to the puzzle stiffened their shoulders, yet the seal remained tight. As they paused, distant campers sent bursts of warmth and laughter through the trees, reminding them that daylight was thinning. Lina adjusted her grip, turned the object, and tapped the seam with the broken twig. A soft pop escaped. The halves parted, and a reed whistle slid into view. Sawyer raised it, surprised to find tiny holes along one side. He blew once; the pitch matched the squirrel’s earlier chatter so closely that both of them stared back at the fern bed, certain another dash of fur would follow. The lump they had mistaken for a nut was, in fact, a call the forest had concealed. Their earlier guesses proved wrong, yet their hands no longer shook—small discoveries often help people encounter fears of the unknown without warning them first. A breeze cooled the clearing as Sawyer lifted the tiny whistle toward the open sky.
