Soft morning light filled the narrow path. Lily carried an empty woven basket today. Her family expected sweet apples for supper later. She and her brother had a simple arrangement for chores. A gentle breeze waved tall grass beside the wooden gate. The gate used a thick beam as a lock. Lily pushed the beam with both hands. The beam stayed still and blocked her way.

She stepped back and looked at the beam again. She tapped its middle, and it sounded hollow, almost like a drum. Curious, she pressed one end downward with care. The beam bent a little, then slid to the side. That movement shook a small pile of stones near the post. Pebbles rolled downhill and struck a hidden bush. A young fawn jumped from the leaves and dashed across the meadow. Lily watched the animal disappear between low trees. The gate now hung open, and fresh air reached the path. She lifted her basket and walked toward the apple tree.
