English 原文
Rough cardboard scraped Maeve's palm as she guided a long, narrow box toward the ladder stool. Warm air from a small vent carried a nurturing smell of old paper. Fine dust drifted under the single bulb. Theo balanced an old library cart loaded with folded cloth and labeled bins. Their plan: lift the box onto the top shelf before lunchtime. The shelf door, held by a tired spring, kept swinging shut with a dull thud. At the same time, the floor sloped toward the door. So the loaded cart rolled forward whenever Theo released its handle. Two opposite pushes met in the cramped aisle: the door pressed inward, momentum pressed outward. A low discussion drifted from the hallway and then faded. But inside, cardboard brushed metal and time pushed against their shoulders. A narrow space between two crates offered a brief sanctuary for their feet, but the cart could not fit there.
Maeve climbed two steps of the trustworthy stool and pinched the box between both hands. Theo tried to catch the door with his hip; the spring pushed back and knocked the box edge. Cardboard scraped, and Maeve hopped down before the load toppled. She stared at the restless cart, wheels still turning slowly on the slope. A thought landed with the faint roll. Maeve angled the cart toward the door, cranked the handle, and stepped aside. Momentum carried the load; the front corner wedged under the swinging panel and held it open. Now the stool fit through the gap; she lifted the box onto the top rail. The victory was short. The cart bounced back, nudged the shelf, and a plastic tray skated along the metal. String coiled out of the tray and draped across the floor tiles. Neither cart nor door moved again for a long beat. Loops of string lay still under the open panel.
