The Crack Inside the Bucket- 適合中級的英語短篇故事

A dim lantern bulb above the saddle rack flickered twice across the leaning hay bales. Fern reached for a pitchfork, trying to pull one loose straw bundle closer, yet the tine caught only the edge. The bale rocked forward, slid down the wooden beam, and bumped a feed bucket. The bucket rolled away with growing speed, its metal rim rasping against the floor. Half a turn later it struck a grooming brush, sent the brush skidding, and the brush nudged a rope halter hanging from a nail. The leather loop swung outward and slapped a grain sack; dust puffed into the narrow stripe of light. A goat in the next stall lifted its head, ears twitching at the quiet thuds.

Curiosity sparked in Fern. She eased another hay bale from the stack, this time giving it a sharper push. Momentum carried the heavy block farther; it knocked the first bucket again, but now the bucket’s side, already cracked in a jagged line like a tiny lightning bolt, split wider. The rim clanged, bounced against the water trough, and water sloshed onto the dusty boards. The puddle spread, dark and thin, until it touched the path of the rolling brush from before. Wet bristles lost friction, and the brush glided farther, tapping the stall gate. The gate swung inward a finger’s width, just enough for the goat’s nose to reach through. Outside the doorway, grey clouds flashed with distant lightning, and a brief glow painted a faint rainbow in the spray drifting from the trough. Fern imagined how many more objects might move if she kept testing, yet her imagination paused when the bale lodged against the wheelbarrow and refused to budge. Water kept dripping from the bucket’s rim. The gate stayed half-open, the goat still sniffing at the damp boards.

好奇心在芬恩心中竄起。她又從堆裡慢慢搬下一捆草包，這次用力更猛一些。沉重的草包帶著更多動能向前衝，重新撞上第一個桶；桶側原本像迷你閃電般鋸齒的裂痕立刻擴大。桶邊當啷一聲彈到水槽，水濺到佈滿灰塵的木板上。水漬蔓延，變成又暗又薄的水帶，碰到先前滑動過的刷子軌跡。濕刷毛失去摩擦力，往前飄行，輕敲欄門。門內縮開一指寬，剛好讓山羊的鼻子探出。門外，灰雲中遠處閃電一閃，照亮水槽濺起的水霧，隱約畫出一道小小彩虹。芬恩想像如果繼續試驗，還有多少東西能動，但當草包卡在獨輪車邊不再動彈時，她的想像停住了。桶邊的水仍然滴落。欄門半掩著，山羊繼續在濕木板上嗅來嗅去。
