Three strides from the stable door, a low wooden trough waited between two pony stalls. Pearl dragged a grain sack toward it, each step sending fine sawdust clouds around her boots. The bay pony sniffed the air, and its ears flicked when the sack brushed the metal gate. Noon light drew a serene stripe across the straw-littered floor, turning the dust into glitter. Pearl loosened the twine knot, then poured a slow stream of oats. The grains bounced and piled, forming tiny mounds against the trough’s rough plank. She guided the flow with one hand, keeping the heavier husks from showering outside the rim.

Above her, a loose loft board shifted as the afternoon heat dried the wood. A thin ribbon of sawdust slipped through the gap and trickled directly onto the fresh oats. The surprise sprinkle startled the pony, and its muzzle nudged the trough, tilting the new mound. Oats slid toward the edge like a tiny island drifting from shore. Pearl shifted her stance and pressed her elbow against the trough to steady it. Something hard tapped the wood. A brass button shaped like a mermaid tumbled out of the falling sawdust and landed among the grains. She blinked, then scooped the button aside with two fingers, letting the remaining dust settle where it pleased.

With the grains safe, the routine continued. Pearl crossed the aisle to refresh the water trough. She tipped a pail so clear streams splashed over the rim and washed stray husks toward the drain. Cool shade pooled in that corner, an oasis against the rising heat inside the timber frame. The pony shook its mane; tiny flakes of dried mud scattered across the sawdust floor. Pearl returned, lifted the feed bucket, and hooked it onto the stall rail. She brushed loose oats from her palms and nudged the hay bale closer to the gate. Fresh sawdust swirled above the trough.
