The Barrel That Came Back- 適合中級的英語短篇故事

English 原文
"This plank is heavy," Erik muttered.
He braced both knees against the pier boards.
Ivy crouched nearby while salt air prickled their cheeks and gull cries crossed the sky.
A short gangplank sloped from the pier to an old fishing boat.
Earlier, a loose barrel had rolled down it, stopping near a bollard.
The barrel still rocked gently, each sway nudging a coil of rope against the cleat.
Ivy placed a palm on the iron band and felt the momentum inside the liquid cargo shift.
Pushing the barrel became their afternoon exercise, so they leaned together and gave it a shove.
It spun toward the gangplank and clipped the wood.
The barrel bounced back with a thud.
The impact rattled a tin crate filled with library brochures left from a harbor festival.
The unexpected clang rang bright across the planks, so they tried again.
The game grew more creative with every shove.
They collaborated without words, changing angle and force with each attempt.
On the second push, the barrel glided farther.
Friction from a tarpaulin slowed it, and it stopped beside a buoy tied to the mast.
Ivy adjusted the rope coil into a loose circle.
Erik tapped the barrel, and it rolled inside the loop like a giant bead.
Barrel, rope, and buoy formed an accidental alliance of shapes.
Each collision met wood, fiber, or rubber with different echoes.
A final nudge sent the barrel half-spinning across the planks.
It pressed against the bollard again, this time locked by the rope’s own weight.
Both children stepped back.
The odd arrangement now broke the long straight lines of the pier.
Two overlapping palm prints marked the dark wood where they had pushed together.
Waves tapped against the pier boards below.
