English 原文
By the time Grey reached the clinic lobby, faint specks had dried into soft footprints beside the form desk. Honey-tinted light from a high window slid across them, outlining each toe mark like warm brushstrokes on linoleum. A recorded narrator from the hygiene screen above the reception desk listed hand-washing steps in a calm rhythm. The announcement had been recorded years earlier, yet the voice carried a newly polished sheen while the buzz of fluorescent tubes filled the spaces between words. Grey paused, letting the scene settle, and tried to savor the brief stillness before joining the queue. Plastic numbers lay in a shallow tray, but the next ticket had jammed beneath the others, leaving only half its corner exposed.
While he worked the bent card free, the queue advanced and the display jumped from twenty-one to twenty-four. Two people exchanged puzzled glances, yet a soft ripple of appreciation spread as the elderly man at the counter received his medicine and lifted a shining copper jar that belonged to him. Grey brushed his sleeve against the dusty footprints, expecting ordinary dirt. Instead, golden flecks floated upward, catching the lamplight like crushed pollen. He crouched, drew a tissue, and dabbed the nearest print; the smear turned a bright herbal yellow that left his fingers scented and sticky.
Curiosity tugged stronger than the moving line. Grey stayed low and traced the trail toward the hallway. The marks grew clearer where the floor met a bench: no heel shapes, only loose powder escaping a torn paper sachet wedged beneath the seat. He nudged the packet open; dried dandelion root and stems spilled, explaining the false footsteps. Someone had dropped their herbal tea mix, and the yellow dust had pressed into shoe prints afterward. A nurse paused, laughed softly, and offered a fresh tissue. Grey answered with a grateful nod, then gathered the crumpled packet, intending to hand it over to the pharmacy window. He was reaching for the wooden counter edge.
