English 原文
"Ticket A23 is next."
Lily’s shoes stopped against the linoleum as a warm iodine twang drifted from the waiting-room counter. A licorice-sweet cough-drop smell clung to the plastic chairs, and stale cracker crumbs left a faint buttery scent near her knees. She balanced the clipboard, chasing the chalk-dry odor of the form paper with quick breaths, and aimed for the pharmacy window. Eucalyptus spray floated from a vent overhead, yet the queue board blinked A22 again. The number had been called twice already, but no one moved. Somewhere down the hallway a cart rolled, leaving a metallic tea-kettle whiff that mixed strangely with the sugary air. Lily tightened her grip on the pen; collecting the bandage pack felt like a simple goal.
The screen flashed green, then skipped to B04 without warning. A sour plastic tang rose as the crowd shuffled, and Lily spotted her acquaintance Rafe near the form-filling table. A cinnamon-gum aroma marked his sociable grin. “Ink ran out,” he whispered, lifting an empty pen barrel. Lily’s own signature box still lay blank; resistance returned. She tried to reconcile the blurred guide lines with the fresh form, but a medicinal pine reek burst from a toppled bottle on the table, stirring thoughts of a damp forest floor. Obligation to finish pressed harder while the clerk’s voice crackled through speakers, reading numbers out of order. Rafe produced a stubby crayon that smelled of wax and orange peel, and together they pressed the marks deep enough for the scanner to sense.
They reached the pharmacy window just as a yeasty bread odor floated in from the parking-lot snack stand, masking the earlier chemicals. The packet of bandages slid forward; cold air around it tasted of stainless steel. Lily tucked the packet into her bag, nodding thanks while Rafe drifted toward the exit, already chatting about weekend markets. Behind them, the spilled pine liquid kept dripping from the tabletop edge, releasing fresh waves of resin scent into the hallway.
