Warm seaweed and lamp oil mixed along the spiral stairs. Theo knelt in the lamp room beside a wooden tray that could spin like a small wheel. He tried to organize scattered ceramic plates left from a quiet dinner party the night before. Each plate slipped slightly as the floor trembled. Above him, the great fresnel lens turned on its iron ring. Gears groaned. The giant glass drum began its steady dance, sending wide bands of light across the fogged windows.

Down in the service corridor, Cora lifted a tin box filled with polished seashells. She walked upward; the stairs curved, each step tracing a slow spiral below the spinning lens. A sudden shudder from the highest gear shook the railing. The wooden tray beside Theo reeled, pushed by that vibration, and twirled faster. One loose plate glided outward, tapped the tin box, and the shells spilled in a bright swirl. Several shells rolled around the tray, struck the lens housing, and bounced back toward the stairs. The cascade kept leaping between shell and gear. Every fresh knock jarred the iron ring, and each jolt spun the tray harder.

Theo pressed his palm against the tray’s edge, slowing its rush. Cora crouched, gathered the runaway shells, and placed them on the still turning surface. Together they guided the rotation into neat order, aligning shell after shell until the movement evened out. The atmosphere near the lamp stayed warm, and the sweeping beam traced smooth movements across grey water outside. Two concentric rings of shells circled the plate, half arranged by Theo, half by Cora. Far below, waves kept crashing against the rocks, throwing soft spray into the night air.

西奧用手掌抵住盤緣，把速度慢下來。柯拉蹲身撿回逃竄的貝殼，放在仍在旋轉的盤面上。兩人一同引導轉動，貝殼一枚接一枚排成整齊圓環，盤面終於平穩。燈旁空氣依舊溫暖，掃海光束在灰水面上畫出流暢移動。兩圈同心的貝殼繞盤旋轉，一半出自西奧之手，一半來自柯拉。下方浪花持續衝擊岩石，把細緻水霧拋向夜空。
