“The basket is slipping.”

Luna tightened her grip and the plastic rim pressed a minty scent from the detergent pods against her coat sleeve. She and Finn stepped into the shared laundry room, where warm humidity mixed with bleach fumes that prickled their noses. The drum of the single machine spun, already full of someone else’s sheets, and a metallic tang wafted from the coin slot.

Finn crouched, tapped the slot, and white powder flaked onto his fingers. He fetched a wooden spoon from a forgotten box of utensils on the shelf—his makeshift lever. The spoon creaked against the jammed plate; sour steam from a Nearby boiler vent rolled over them, stinging their throats. The plate shifted but refused to drop the coin. While Finn wrestled with it, Luna’s eyes watered from chlorine vapors, and the basket bumped her hip. On the floor, the building’s furry companion—a gray cat with soap-speckled paws—paced, leaving damp paw prints that carried the sharp smell of wet dust.

At last, the plate gave way with a dull thunk. Cold water rushed, carrying the earthy odor of old pipes. A sudden cough of pressure sent a thin spray across the room and through the open door into the corridor. The spray reached the balcony threshold where sunlight touched planters overflowing with basil, thyme, and a stray tomato vine; in that light the little balcony seemed a mystical garden floating above traffic exhaust. Luna leaned out, tasted the sweet-green mist, and for one magical moment a rainbow fragment curved inside it—a wonderous sight that vanished as quickly as the water pressure steadied. The machine rumbled into its cycle, and the cat curled beside it like a faithful companion guarding treasure.

On the stairwell two floors up, a different washer began its spin, releasing a gust of lavender powder that drifted downward and mingled with the basil scent below.

「籃子要滑下去了。」

露娜抓緊塑膠邊，洗衣膠囊散出的薄荷味沾在外套袖口。她和費恩走進共用洗衣間，溫暖的潮氣攪著刺鼻的漂白水味。唯一的洗衣機正轉著，別人的床單佔滿了內桶，投幣口散出鐵鏽味。

費恩蹲下，輕敲投幣口，白色粉末落到指尖。他從架上遺忘的餐具盒拿出一支木湯匙，當成臨時撬桿。湯匙抵著卡住的金屬板發出細響；附近鍋爐孔冒出的酸熱蒸氣撲來，嗆得兩人喉嚨發緊。金屬板晃動卻仍不肯下落。費恩使力時，露娜的眼被氯氣薰得泛淚，籃子撞著她的髖骨。地板上，樓裡的灰貓——腳掌沾著肥皂泡——來回踱步，潮濕灰塵的味道被帶成一串小腳印。

終於，金屬板悶聲一鬆。冷水湧入，夾帶老舊水管的泥土氣。一陣水壓抖動，把細霧噴向走廊。霧沿著門口飄到陽台，陽光撫過滿盆的羅勒、百里香和番茄苗；那瞬間，小小陽台像漂在車流廢氣上的祕密花園。露娜探頭，嚐到青草甜霧，就在那神奇片刻，霧中折出一道微虹——美麗景象轉瞬即逝，水壓便恢復平穩。洗衣機開始轟響，灰貓蜷在旁邊，像忠實守護者守著寶物。

兩層樓上的樓梯間，另一台洗衣機同時進入脫水，薰衣草洗衣粉的氣味席捲而下，與陽台上的羅勒香緩緩匯合。
