“The basket is stuck.”

Kara tugged at the plastic rim; muted thumps bounced around the narrow stairwell. A faint metallic clang rolled down from the shared laundry room above, followed by the low drone of the only washing machine. She carried a canvas sack that rustled where stray packaging materials brushed against its sides. Each step produced a hollow boom from the wooden treads, and her shoes slapped the dusty concrete. Near the mailboxes, a lone pigeon cooed, its notes fluttering through the echoing shaft. From the balcony door a pot of juniper needles sighed when a draft slipped past, adding a peppery scent to the air already vibrating with pipes reverberating behind the walls.

At the laundry room entrance, the machine’s drum still whirred; water hissed against glass. No one stood beside it, but a blinking timer declared eleven more minutes. The ceiling lamp buzzed in uneven bursts. Kara exhaled, setting the basket on the floor, and the woven handles clapped together. She twisted sideways to lean against the wall, yet the buzzing light flickered harder, so she shifted again until her shoulder pressed a cooler tile. The timer crawled. From below, the kiosk on the corner released a steel shutter that rattled like loose coins; the vibration slipped through the balcony rails, up the corridor, and into the room. Her patience thinned. She knelt, unhooked the hose feeding the sink, and drizzled water into a bucket, planning a quick hand-wash. The hose, wrapped in tape whose tenacity surprised her, refused to bend far enough. Water splattered the floor with sharp taps, forcing Kara to jerk the bucket aside.

Just then, the machine’s final spin rumbled to silence, but a new obstacle arrived: the door stayed locked while the indicator light blinked red without rhythm. Kara listened, waited, then angled her weight over the latch and applied slow, steady pressure. A faint pop released it, and the door swung open with a sigh of moist air. She transferred the wet clothes into her basket, stood, and stepped toward the balcony line. Behind her, the washing machine drum continued its lazy revolution, faint bearings humming long after her footsteps faded down the stairwell.

「籃子卡住了。」

到洗衣間門口時，滾筒仍旋轉，水流貼著玻璃嘶嘶作響。旁邊沒有人，但閃爍的計時器顯示還有十一分鐘。天花燈斷斷續續地嗡鳴。卡拉嘆了口氣，把籃子放下，編織把手啪地碰在一起。她側身靠牆，可是燈越閃越烈，於是又換個角度讓肩碰到較冷的瓷磚。計時器慢吞吞前進。樓下街角報攤正放下鋼鐵捲門，整片門板像散硬幣般震動；這震動沿著陽台欄杆一路上傳到走廊與洗衣間。她的耐心被拉長。她跪下來，卸下接在水槽的軟管，想用桶子快速手洗。膠帶的黏著力出乎意料地強，軟管彎不下去，水花劈啪濺在地面，逼得卡拉猛地把桶子挪開。

這時，洗衣機終於停止高速旋轉，可新的阻礙出現：機門鎖死，指示燈毫無規律地紅光閃爍。卡拉側耳聽了聽，等待片刻，然後把身體角度調好，對扣件施加緩而穩的力量。一聲輕響後門扣鬆開，潮濕空氣嘶地吐出。她把濕衣服全搬進籃裡，起身往陽台晾衣線走去。身後，洗衣機滾筒依舊慢慢轉動，細微軸承聲在她消失於樓梯間後仍拖長不斷。
