English 原文
The sharp tang of wet iron clung to a dented bronze key resting on a flour-sprinkled beam. Beyond, the mill wheel churned with patient rhythm, sending faint vibrations through the plank. Pearl stepped over a mound of spilled grain, the cool boards pushing moisture through her thin soles. Light, filtered by warped shutters, crossed the key in narrow stripes that flared and sank with each slow turn of the wheel. Not once did the murmur of water pause; instead, it threaded every corner like a low flute. Pearl lifted the key only to lay it back again, fingertips dusted white, unsure whether the metal belonged to this day or to whatever morning had first placed it there.
Another stripe of light shifted, revealing a carved wooden owl fixed above the grain chute, its hawk-eyed stare chipped yet still watchful. The carving, half-buried in shadow, looked less like decoration and more like a silent guardian judging every sack that passed beneath. Pearl brushed flour from the key’s bow; the dust rose, catching the amber glow and hanging as pale haze before drifting toward the millstone. Only after the particles thinned did she notice a faint groove along the key’s shaft, as though each tooth had once met a lock no larger than a child’s toy. Her thumb followed the groove, then strayed to the long bench where tiny copper gears lay scattered like seeds washed from their pods.
A shallow drawer beneath the bench refused to slide more than an inch, swollen with damp. Pearl braced one knee against the frame; the wood groaned, and a sliver of light fell onto a cluster of yellowed ticket stubs picturing sails and baskets. She thought of river barges docking at some noisy bazaar, each stall lit by lantern smoke while a travelling merchant counted coins under similar haze. Were the key small enough, the enterprise behind those gears might have been a child’s music box sold beside spices and ribbons. One hinge loosened, the drawer yielded by another finger’s width. Pearl paused, palm flat on the edge, a drip from the wheel darkening her sleeve before she pressed again.
The extra space revealed a lacquered tin sphere no bigger than an apple, its surface etched with rivers that mirrored the millrace outside. Her shoulders squared, she coaxed the drawer fully open; then she twisted the key inside a narrow socket at the sphere’s base. Gears whispered, and slanted amber light caught a line of tiny mirrors unfolding like petals. What she had taken for an ordinary key now behaved as a winding stem, granting the sphere slow rotation rather than entrance to any door. A dim melody drifted out, almost drowned by the wheel’s pulse, yet the blend made the room feel older and somehow awake. Pearl lowered the humming sphere onto the beam, released the key, and slipped it into her coat pocket.
