A soft smack echoed each time the glossy taffy landed on the marble slab. Tara pulled the amber ribbon upward, watched it stretch, then folded it back with one deliberate swing. Rubber gloves clung to her wrists, and calm lay over the kitchen except for that steady rhythm. Outside the open door, a striped cat crouched on the patio, ears twitching under a folded umbrella that leaned against the wall. Three mixing bowls huddled together near the sink, while spare wooden spoons formed a loose fence around them. Her ambition today involved nothing grand—she simply wanted the candy to rebound sharply when pressed, the sign it was nearly finished.

Heat from the stovetop thickened the air, and the ribbon started to sag between her hands. The once firm pull now gave a slow, rubbery flex, so she shifted her grip and looped the strand around a nearer hook to keep the tension taut. A thin veil of steam slid across the tiles; lemon light from the window bounced off the damp surfaces and made them glimmer. The stand mixer ticked as its bowl cooled, adding a dry counter-beat to her work. Still, she kept the routine, folding, stretching, compressing the mass, letting it spring back again and again.

A sudden clatter came from outside. The cat dashed forward, knocking the closed umbrella onto its side; the wooden pole bounced, nudged the doorstop, and the kitchen door drifted wider. A draft sailed in and wrapped around Tara’s shoulders. The change cooled the candy at once, and the ribbon stiffened before her next fold. She loosened her grip too late, so the strip tore with a dull snap and slapped against the slab in two pieces. Tara stepped back, palms sticky, curiosity mixing with surprise. She left the split ribbon where it fell and watched thin raindrops begin to drum on the overturned umbrella, their restless tapping carrying her focus beyond the unfinished sweets.
