Mae began to unwind a thin copper coil while climbing the spiral stair of the lighthouse. Each slow step let the metal ribbon slide across her palm and give a soft rattle. She hoped to cultivate a clearer tone from the tiny brass bell that swayed at the coil’s end. The rotating lens above already filled the tower with a steady hum; glass panels caught morning light and tossed bright nets over the stone walls. Salt air cooled the back of her neck and smelled faintly of seaweed. Far below, waves struck hidden caves, and a hollow echo drifted upward. Mae wanted youthful visitors one day to appreciate a softer note than the long moan from the foghorn.

As she fixed the bell to an iron hook, the motor beneath the lens shifted speed. A fresh vibration ran through the metal floor and climbed into the coil. The sudden shake stole slack from her fingers; the coil sprang forward and struck the bell. The ring flew high, echoing against the curved walls in a sharp, rising pitch shift that surprised her. The shock also dimmed the lens’s hum; copper now pressed lightly against its frame and muffled the resonance. Mae paused, then used slow patience: she shortened the coil, tying one extra loop to tame the quiver. The bell kept swinging, yet each swing now carried a warmer tone, deeper and round. Behind her, the lens continued to turn, its rhythm slightly muted while waves below kept pounding the rocks. Spray hissed against the doorway, and sound rolled through the tower without pause.
