Warm pear perfume mingled with a damp hint of bark along the orchard path. A thin ribbon of air carried both scents between low trunks where Finn paused beside a basket and a short wooden ladder. Leaves fluttered overhead while sunlight flashed on a narrow rut that sloped toward a stone border. He picked a small plum from the grass and rolled it along the groove. The fruit gained speed, bounced against an exposed root, and spun to a stop against the ladder foot. Tess arrived carrying an empty sardine tin left from their lunch; metal glinted in her hand. Without a word, she set it at the rut’s lower end, then stepped back as Finn tried again.

Each plum travelled differently. One slid straight, another wobbled and clipped a raised pebble, and a third flew over the root after a careless toss, landing far from the tin. Tess jogged for quick recovery, nudging the stray fruit with her shoe so momentum returned it to the starting spot. They noticed fresh shoots on a nearby branch; the orchard’s quiet rejuvenation showed in that bright green. Finn adjusted angle and pressure, and soon a plum struck the tin’s rim with a clear ring, then twirled inside. Surprise crossed both faces when the sound startled a hidden grasshopper; it sprang up, thumped Finn’s sleeve, and vanished among leaves. A distant woodpecker tapped, and specks of bark drifted from a trunk. Finn let the tin tip on its side and wiped juice from his palm. A robin dived between the rows, its wings beating hard against the bright air.
