A weathered water trough stood four strides from the stable gate. Between them, a thin alley of dust caught mid-morning sun. Cool barn air carried the sweet, earthy perfume of aged hay. Kira paused there when a pale envelope drifted from her jacket pocket. It slid along the ground until it wedged beneath the metal trough. Water inside the trough reflected sunlight upward, throwing restless patterns across the hiding place. Shadows from the beams above overlapped those flashes, masking the envelope completely.

Kira kneeled and twisted her shoulders, yet the glare stabbed at her eyes. Bright water fought deep shadow: two stubborn lights, one blinding, one choking. Her fingers began to tremble after several failed reaches. She searched the stable and found a polished tin scoop used for goat grain. She propped the scoop against the trough rim, its curved belly catching the sun. The reflection curled downward, filling the shadow with a softer glow. Hay dust floated through that beam, refracting tiny colors across the packed earth. Now the envelope appeared again; the flap showed worn creases and a faint grain smell. Kira pinched one corner and drew it into the light. Inside, she found no letter at all. Dried seeds from a flavorful herb filled the paper; the visiting ranger had left them for the animals. The small supply would brighten tomorrow’s feed, she noted while wiping dust from her knees. She folded the flap shut again and tucked the packet into her pocket. Hooves shifted in the yard while sunlight flickered across the trough.
