The Pinwheel’s Sudden Drop-

English 原文
Grant twisted a brass key in the side of a dusty music box, forcing the hidden spring to coil tight. The table under the slanted roof creaked while the gears inside the box began to spin. Thin light slid past a row of trunks, caught a brass candle holder with a round base, and shimmered on a glass snow globe nearby. Inside that globe an underwater castle waited; a tiny wheel would whirl once the water settled, yet Grant focused on the music box. An enamel sink from last winter’s repairs leaned against a rafter, throwing a cold gleam across his hands. Stale warmth pressed against his shirt, and a dry paper smell lingered under the rafters.
A paper pinwheel hung from a thin cord close to the skylight, turning lazily as warm air spiraled up from the floorboards. Each slow pivot pulled the cord tighter, and the pinwheel gradually lowered in a loose corkscrew motion. Grant lifted the music box lid. The melody stopped after three notes; one cog jammed where two teeth met unevenly. He compared it with another wheel and noted the fairness of their spacing, then reached for a small hand drill stored inside a wooden box that once carried a family recipe notebook. He steadied the drill and began to bore a fresh hole, letting the crank reel in steady loops.
On the next rotation, the pinwheel’s cord twisted free. The cardboard wings dropped, spun faster, and brushed the candle holder below. The round base rolled across the table, struck Grant’s elbow, and forced the hand drill to skip. The bit bit into metal, snapped, and scattered filings over the snow globe. Water inside the globe shook; the underwater wheel sprang to life and whirled in a silver blur. Grant blinked, set the broken drill aside, and slid the candle holder away. He replaced the damaged cog with the newly drilled spare, closed the lid, and wound the key once more. The tune returned, thin but continuous. He placed the box beside the sink, watched the lowered pinwheel twirl, then folded a cloth over the tools.
