The swing set, standing a few steps away, moved under another child’s kicking feet, so the chain links knocked softly. Sage watched the rhythm, shoes planted on damp mulch. Behind the bench, last night’s wind had pressed leaf litter into two sharp footprints that resembled a small coyote’s track. Above everything, a dark speck—maybe a distant vulture—circled in slow, deliberate loops. With those sounds and sights around him, Sage formed a single aim: reach a swing seat without sliding off the wet metal.

He paced until the rider jumped away, yet the seat held a shallow puddle. After brief consideration, Theo approached from the sandbox, sleeve edges already dotted with grey grains. Without words, they decided to push forward on the rubber seat, tipping water toward the ground. The seat still glistened, and when Sage lowered a hand, cold drops ran between his fingers. The drizzle thickened, making every exposed bar look lacquered. Adjusting again, Theo tugged a dry scarf from a pocket and ran it across the surface, but fresh beads appeared immediately. Raindrops kept winning this quiet race, so the pair turned toward the sandbox where drainage created tiny rivulets.

Wet sand darkened their footprints as they knelt near a spot the earlier shower had eroded. Sage scooped carefully; grains slid away and revealed a spiral pattern that had been pressed into stone. The shape looked like a small shell fossil, edges faint yet exact. They exchanged quick glances, but the stone itself offered no heat, no clue—only the swirl, rigid and pale. A gust rocked the empty swings behind them, chains clinking in uneven tempo. Theo placed the scarf beneath the stone, lifting it together; sand continued to slip through the fabric weave. They left the swing unused, setting the stone beside the slide’s ladder. Rain gathered along the edges of the newly exposed imprint.
