A low bell thudded through the fluorescent hum, marking five minutes before the display in the teacher’s office was due. They stepped into the corridor, soles pressing against smooth tiles warmed by afternoon air.

Halfway to the office doorway, a classmate brushed past. The tray jolted, and a thin wave slid over the rim. Water splashed onto the glossy floor and began to spread faster than either expected. Sara caught the tray before more escaped, but the first spill already flowed under a rolling cart that carried a bright yellow model crane from the engineering club. The cart had been positioned beside the door all morning; now the wet film reduced friction, and its small wheels drifted forward. Papers stacked on the bottom shelf wobbled, their edges absorbing moisture and curling like soft petals.

Dean lunged, setting the tray on a desk, then planted a rubber doorstop against the cart’s front wheel. The crane rocked once and stopped, its metal arm quivering gently above the soaked pages. Behind them, water still traveled, but the flow had thinned. It slid across grout lines, reached a scuffed geography board, and touched a cardboard terrain model that showed a broad floodplain. A thin ribbon of water traced a gentle curve across the tile and slid under the model near the wall.
