"The bucket is stuck," Ben said.

He tugged at the caramel-colored handle, and the rim jerked free with a sandy gasp. The sudden release toppled a small ridge of ochre sand that had built up beside the sandbox wall. Grains poured like honey and struck an abandoned orange ball. The ball rolled across the rubber surface, picking up rust-brown dust until it nudged the low end of the wooden seesaw. The plank acted as a quiet lever; its far side rose, tilting a humble plastic rake that had rested on the seat. The rake slid off, clattered down the metal frame, and rattled toward the swing set, where Quinn steadied a dangling chain just in time.

Ben wiped his palm on his shorts and confessed that he only wanted space for a moat around his sand castle plan. Quinn crouched and used both hands to press the seesaw back to level, halting any further tilt. While the plank settled, Tara arrived from the slide area and placed a flat stone against the ball, blocking its path before wind could push it again. The three friends paused to ponder the oddly precise path everything had taken, tracing each mark in the sand and on the worn plank. Above them, afternoon light fell in amber bands through the climbing structure’s lattice, showing fresh scratches where the rake had traveled.

At the same hour, near the bench by the water fountain, a speckled wren darted under the slats. Chips of bread tumbled from an earlier picnic, and the tiny bird kept picking at them. A small wren fluttered beneath the bench toward the scattered crumbs.
