Most of the workshop air was warm with yeasted dough, but a sharp iodine reek clung near the doorway. Wooden benches carried streaks of dried glue, and pepper dust pricked Wren’s tongue each time she breathed. She aimed to lift a wide serving platter from the top shelf and finish a display for tomorrow’s craft market. The shelf, however, groaned under a squat crate of clay mugs that still held a faint earthy dampness. Those mugs had been fired only yesterday, and the steam-sweet odor of cooling clay still drifted from their rims. When Wren tugged the crate, sour sawdust scattered, yet the heavy box barely moved.

She pressed both palms around a thin cedar wedge that lay among chisels, hoping the simple tool might shift the weight. The wedge squeaked against resin, releasing a pine-bitter scent as it slid under the crate. A second push carried the wooden box two finger-widths, enough to tilt it, but an unseen corner caught on a knot in the plank. Frustrated, Wren braced one knee and leaned harder; the crate lurched sideways, and something small toppled from behind the mugs. A paper packet burst on the floor, spreading dried oregano whose green spice filled her nose. Under the stray leaves, she spotted a rolled note marked “vital supplies” beside three loose screws. The unexpected find distracted her, yet the top shelf finally stood clear.

She climbed a short stool, tasting iron as dust rained from the steel brackets above. Fingers around the cold rim, she eased the serving platter down, noticing an off-center arrangement of scratches where mugs had rubbed earlier. A metallic tang mixed with the lingering oregano as she set the platter on the bench. Pine, yeast, and herb now mingled across the room; a faint peppery aroma stayed in the warm air.

她踩上矮凳，鐵架落塵帶來淡鐵腥味。手指扣住冷盤緣，小心把盛盤移下，注意到盤面偏中心處被杯底蹭出一道道細痕。當盤子擺在工作台上，松木、酵香與草本辛味混作一股味流；微微胡椒般的尾香留在溫暖空氣中。
