English 原文
Olive ducked under the warped lintel and stepped into the mill’s dim entry bay. Damp air pressed against her cheeks, and the percussion of the riverwheel thudded through the floorboards. She moved past hanging sacks, their woven fabric rough against her shoulder, and followed the narrow stair that hugged the wall. With every tread the timber offered a muffled groan, as though each nail were retelling its age. Not once did she rush; the grainy banister chilled her palms, transmitting small shivers from the turning axle outside.
At the loft she let the door fall to, hoping the higher room might serve as a quiet sanctuary from the wheel’s relentless beat. Sunlight sifted in thin stripes, revealing motes that drifted like gossamer above stacked barrels. Her goal was simple: drape a canvas curtain so flour dust would no longer settle on the spare grindstones. She had designated one overhead beam for the task, marking it months earlier with a chalk star. Only when her shoulder brushed the damp wall did she notice that faint emblem again. The star looked smaller now, edges blurred, and the wood beneath it carried a soft give beneath her probing thumb.
Hand still on the sagging rope, she eased one boot along the adjacent joist, then paused. It was that tiny chalk star that caught her off guard: pale strands of spider silk clung to its grooves, revealing a hairline split she had never seen. The known mark, once reliable, now hinted at hidden weakness. As though the planks were glass, she shifted her weight back, and the wheel below promptly transmitted a deeper tremor through the loft. A floury gust followed, swirling past her face; for an instant, the loft’s hush broke into a dry, whispering swirl that settled nowhere.
She waited, sensing the board’s slight bow, and pictured the curtain’s weight dragging it further. The adjustment came in her stance rather than in any tool—knees bent, arms loose, balance centered toward the sound support behind her. Were another beam within reach, the task might continue; instead, she studied the ceiling, counting knots and imagining fresh anchor points. Peace hung over the barrels again, yet the river kept its pulse. Her boot hovered above the star-marked plank, dust eddying around the sole while she decided whether to step forward or climb back down.
