Dust Under the Tipping Lid-

English 原文
Tin pans rattled against each other beneath a faded awning, and Hugo braced his palms on the trembling market table. He aimed to slide a wooden crate of polished cups onto the surface before buyers crowded the lane. A thin fault line zig-zagged across the stone pavement, so every push made the crate jerk sideways and jar his wrists. Around him, mountainous piles of spice sacks pressed outward, narrowing the passage and forcing his shoulders to squeeze with each movement. The crate had been packed by hand that morning, its weight balanced but unforgiving, and the iron lid of an old underground vault lay exactly where the wheels needed to roll.
On the first shove, the front wheels dipped into the crack and Hugo’s knees buckled. He rocked backward, regaining balance, then tried again by lifting one edge; the opposite corner scraped the ground and stalled. A street musician hurried past, his portable stand swinging wide. The strap slipped, and glittering equipment—small bells, a narrow drum—clattered across the stones, blocking the narrow gap Hugo still hoped to use. He crouched, scooped the bells, and felt calf muscles tighten as he twisted. A voice behind him muttered an apology; Tara emerged, a backpack bumping against her spine. She knelt, slid the pack beneath the crate as a wedge, and signaled with a nod.
Hugo gripped the crate while Tara pressed her shoulder against its side. Their combined strain lifted the front wheels clear of the fault line; the crate rocked onto the backpack, rolled forward, and landed squarely on the table. Just then, a fresh tremor ran through the pavement—not dangerous, only enough to tip the vault lid. The lid slammed back with a metallic thud, scattering fine dust onto their shoes. Buyers filled the lane at once, so Hugo and Tara stepped aside. The iron lid that had been level with the stones now leaned at a sharp angle.
