English 原文
The brass peg beside the laundry-room door showed only a dull ring of cleaner metal, as though a small circle of sound had been rubbed away. Dean leaned closer; the corridor carried a distant hiss from water pipes and a sporadic tap where a vent cover quivered. Lyra’s shoes whispered across the tiles, then stopped. A washing machine behind the door rumbled without rhythm, its spin hitting odd low notes like a drum learning new music.
They listened first. Dean knocked on the door; the hinges answered with a hollow cough, yet the knob held still. A flyer on the wall displayed swirls resembling plankton drifting through dark water, and its corners rattled whenever the machine reached full pitch. Lyra pointed toward the balcony; a chickadee’s three-note call bounced down the stairwell, brief and bright between the mechanical growls. Last summer’s drought had been blamed for weak water pressure, and every surge inside the pipes now groaned as if remembering dryness. Dean tried the knob again, shoulder against the panel, but the latch refused and the wash cycle kept roaring. If the rumble grew any stronger, the floor would vibrate like loose cymbals.
A pause arrived when the drum slowed. Dean spotted a toolbox on a laundry cart; its lid had been left open by a weekend volunteer who oiled squeaky hinges around the building. He slid a flathead driver under the doorplate, easing two screws until the strike slipped. The door swung inward, releasing a puff of warm lint and the gentle sigh of damp towels brushing one another. A silver ring with the lost key clinked inside the drum’s mouth, trapped behind the filter gate. Lyra braced the gate, Dean reached, and the soft fabric lining made his fingertips feel like a million dollars. Together they stepped back into the corridor. Behind them, the loosened doorplate now sagged a millimeter lower, exposing a thread of quiet darkness along its edge.
