English 原文
Hardly had Nina pushed the storage-room door aside when humid air brushed her face. She stepped into the old greenhouse annex where the metre-tall terrarium rose like a misted glass mountain. On a nearby shelf, the curator’s notebook lay closed under a thin film of dust. Nina had visited often, checking the slow cultivation of mosses and ferns she planted during spring, yet today the space appeared narrower, as though the curved walls had swollen with steam. Tiny droplets skated down the interior, each forming, sliding, then disappearing into soil—a private rendezvous of water and earth. Her fingertips traced the outside; the glass felt rough with faint mineral grit, a texture she did not remember. Near the base lay a short wooden tool no bigger than a matchstick, carved like a miniature harvester’s sickle; she recalled leaving it on the opposite side. The misplacement pressed harder than the warm glass against her fingertips.
Her palms still cool from the corridor, she rotated the metal ring that locked the lid, expecting the usual slight give. This time it refused, the joint crusted with dried condensation salts. Seldom had the mechanism offered such stubborn weight. She loosened her grip, exhaled, and then shifted her stance, sliding one thumb beneath the ring for better leverage. Grain by grain, the seal crushed, releasing a muted sigh from inside. The fern nearest the wall unfolded farther than she remembered, pushing a leaf against the glass until the veins looked immense. Beneath that leaf, a small wolverine figurine had moved as well; it now crouched beside the misplaced sickle, as if guarding a harvest that continued without witnesses. What stopped her was the faint groove left in the moss—two parallel lines, fresh, straight, leading toward the terrarium’s shaded centre.
Nina hesitated, one boot edging back, then followed the lines with her gaze until they vanished under a mound of bright green. She lifted the lid a hand’s width; warm air spiralled out, carrying the loamy scent of ongoing cultivation. Moisture beaded on her knuckles. She reached in and brushed the moss; the surface was soft yet firm, like a sponge holding unspoken stories. A thicker droplet slid down the interior wall, crossed the wolverine’s varnished back, and met another on the figurine’s nose—their tiny rendezvous sending a ripple across reflected light. Only then did she notice paler, older tracks radiating from the same centre, marks she likely overlooked for months; the miniature world had been mapping its own history all along. She replaced the lid gently, and as she stepped away, a bead slid from the rim and vanished into the moss.
