Circle Beneath the Magnolia Petal-

English 原文
A pale line of damp stone curved along the inner wall of the irrigation channel—yesterday the water had reached that mark, so where had it gone? Gwen brushed a fallen magnolia petal from the rim, its cool surface matching the early chill that slipped over her knuckles. Beyond the gate the channel forked toward the orchard, each branch once measured to a finger’s width; now a hush replaced the usual murmur, and the air carried no spray. Rarely had the stones lain so exposed, their grey turning almost silver in the slanted light.
Years earlier, when the channel had first carried water, the slabs arrived from a quarry upriver, their undersides still warm from summer sun. Heat had faded since, but wear told the story: edges rounded by decades of flow, moss threading the joints, rust tracing the iron pins. Her sleeves rolled higher, skin prickled by the morning chill, she crouched beside a sluice and watched condensation bead on the lever. Were the plank a fraction looser, the thin stream might have slipped beneath, yet the timber sat firm, sealing the groove as tightly as the day it was set.
She followed the silent watercourse until steam began to rise where sunlight met the remaining trickle; there, hesitation caught her. One branch led back toward the cottage, another arced through a stand of cedars that once felt like sanctuary on hot afternoons. She set a stone against the cedar gate, listened, then removed it again, uncertain which path might restore the flow downstream. Only when a single firefly drifted from the shaded branch—its tiny glow wavering in the cool draft—did she lift the cedar gate a hand’s breadth, choosing action over stillness. The released water slid forward, thin but steady, and the channel answered with a faint, returning murmur.
As she retraced her steps, the revived current lapped against the earlier damp line; nothing else seemed changed. Yet the magnolia petal she had brushed aside now floated beside the mark, circling gently in the newly risen surface. What stopped her was that quiet rotation, as though the petal had always belonged to the pattern of stone and water. She watched until the circle steadied, then turned toward the orchard, the chill easing while warmth lingered on the rim.
