The paper floated nearer the porcelain lip, edges curled inward, shadows grown thick; he reached, then paused, fingertips hovering a breadth above the bamboo tongs. Something in the print resisted his rhythm—the woman’s sleeve carried a ragged runoff, while the veil, once exquisite, now drowned beneath blackened silver.

Glen lifted the sheet with the tongs and slipped it into the second tray; a swirl of clear solution swept the darkest pools aside. That faint diagonal stripe along the border, lighter than any highlight, matched a band lying across the easel—the safelight had hung off-center all along. He straightened the lamp, and the amber wash settled evenly across wood, trays, and his own forearms speckled with cold droplets. He trimmed the blotched sheet, set the pieces aside to discard later, and lowered fresh paper; the tongs advanced in a deliberate leap forward now. Nearby, curled scraps darkened beneath stray drips, soft percussion tapping porcelain as Glen pressed the latch and the room settled.
