He possessed a quiet knack for crisp creases, yet the ruler he needed lay pinned beneath a square storage container filled with paper clips. Its content rattled once when he tried to slide the tin, but dew under its base glued it to the wooden bench. A teacher, Nina, chalked the wide target circle below, marking the gathering place for every successful glide. Luke squinted at the distant ring, rolled another sheet, and reshaped the nose by guesswork, his inquisitive nature clear in the way he compared each angle with careful fingertips.

As he stepped onto the grassy launch strip, a silver-blue gust swept uphill. The first throw rode that moving air, then skewed hard right, grazed the ribbon wind indicator, and knocked the wooden stick aside. The stake, which had been loosened by overnight drizzle, toppled, dragging the ribbon through damp grass; the fluttering cloth snagged the plane and folded one wing. Wind, ribbon, and paper formed a tiny chain reaction that left the craft useless. Jogging down, Luke retrieved it and noticed the flattened tip. Inside the crushed fold glimmered a lone paper clip, likely shaken free from the stubborn tin. The very heft that had pinned his ruler now offered balance. Back on the slope, he held the modified dart against the cooling breeze. Added weight cut through the shifting air; the plane skimmed above the ribbon, cleared the slope, and dropped neatly inside the chalked ring. Nina raised an eyebrow but continued tamping the loose stick deeper into the earth, stopping any further tangle. Luke trotted toward the bench, already planning a lighter model. Behind him, the ribbon he had brushed past kept fluttering against the upright stick, its lower edge tracing small arcs across the grass.
