English 原文
"Tulip on the edge!" Joy jerked upright, her shoulder brushing the leash of the cocker spaniel crouched under her waiting-area armchair. The cashier station lay a few steps away, yet a bulky recliner, parked for repair, squeezed the aisle and slowed every movement around it. Joy's take-out order already steamed beneath the heat lamp beyond that doorway; she aimed to reach it before the bread dried. She braced both palms against the armchair’s stuffed side and pushed. The chair barely shifted; its weight pressed back through her elbows, and the fabric scratched her forearms. A small brass compass that hung from her backpack slapped her hip with each effort, tapping like a drum and reminding her she was hardly moving at all.
With one last shove, the armchair nudged the idle recliner behind it. The recliner’s wooden runner struck a bar stool; the stool rocked forward, then its seat rim glanced a serving cart loaded with clean plates. Wheels began to roll toward the entrance, dishes rattling in an uneven rhythm. Steam from the coffee machine drifted across Joy’s glasses and blurred her vision, yet the low rumble of porcelain warned her clearly enough. The spaniel rose, nails scraping tile, ears flat. Joy abandoned the idea of clearing the path; instead her hands gripped the stubborn armchair again. The same heaviness that had slowed her now offered an anchor. She angled the chair across the aisle, letting its solid arm press against the cart’s handle. Metal wheels spun once, met dense upholstery, and stopped without a single plate leaving the rack.
The ripple still carried forward; the stool toppled back and wobbled like a loose compass needle, but its swing ended against the padded side of the recliner. No further objects moved. Joy kept one knee against the armchair to hold the improvised barrier while her free hand reached for the waiting order that a server slid across the heat-lamp shelf. Warm cardboard pressed into her palm; grease spots formed dark circles under the bag. Behind her, the spaniel sniffed the cooled tulip water dripping from the cart’s vase and flicked droplets across the floor with a shake. Joy shifted her weight, shoulders squared, and was steering the heavy chair back toward the wall, wheels of the cart still turning lazily beneath her guiding grip.
