Cool clay pressed outward between Keira’s knuckles as she packed a fist-sized wedge against the first shale slab she had lodged between the two fixed boulders. Upstream, the water still slid over her boots and curled through the narrow gap with a hiss; the surface needed to climb as high as the reddish scrape on the right rock before the current would be forced toward the side pool. One slab alone could not reduce the flow. She rose, knees stiff, and crossed to the shale outcrop where thin plates lay stacked like pages. With both hands she lifted a second plate—no thicker than her thumb yet broad as a notebook—and carried it back, the bargain plastic trowel tucked under one elbow. She eased the plate into place; the current flexed around it, but the hiss grew softer, showing a partial gain.

Sunlight angled lower, warming the exposed stones until thin ribbons of moisture began to evaporate and curl into the air. Keira had already noticed an overt dark line climbing the upstream rock: proof that each new piece was lifting the water bit by bit. She fetched a third slab, slightly smaller, and slid it down. The fresh plate nudged a rounded pebble, which rolled forward, tapped another, and sent that smaller stone tumbling into the channel. The second pebble struck a twig caught between boulders; the branch jerked sideways and jammed, narrowing the passage even more. The cascading shuffle of stone-on-stone paused only when the twig wedged crosswise, its motion lighter than the first impact and dying away quickly. If that twig slipped, the whole line would loosen, but for the moment the unintended assist amplified her work.

Vance, seated downstream and acting more like a field technician than a parent while he sketched water insects, noticed the shift and tossed her a short length of driftwood. She braced it against the twig as an extra prop. The combined mass of three slabs, two pebbles, and the double brace crossed the hidden threshold at once; upstream the once-flat sheet bulged gently and began to spill over the bank-side pool. A wider shelf had been carved by earlier floods, and water now glided there in a quiet sheet while pebbles beyond the dam clicked softly. Keira was leaning forward, palm steadying the quivering slab against the stronger push.
