Glen slid a smooth, sun-warmed pebble onto a narrow cedar stick that balanced like a seesaw across the puddle’s gritty rim. It was midday, and the stone courtyard gave off dry heat that prickled through his trousers while his tortoise, a slow reptile named Mica, waited on the warm observation stone beside him. The conundrum was simple to state yet tricky to solve: one large white pebble lay in the puddle centre, hiding a branching mineral pattern he wanted to study, and his fingers could not reach without scattering the delicate film. The first light pebble weighed the cedar down a finger’s breadth, then froze; alone, its force was plainly insufficient.

He fetched a second pebble from the dried clearing where surplus stones had gathered after children’s earlier play. Its surface felt powdery, almost chalk-like, and he added it to the same end of the stick. The cedar dipped lower, water licking its underside, but the target pebble stayed unmoved. If he had dropped the second weight too quickly, the plank would have slipped from its perch and spoiled the pattern; he breathed across the board instead, letting the vapour drift away. A third, slightly heavier pebble soon followed. The extra mass tipped the cedar in a sudden, definite pivot; the board’s far end kicked upward, struck the white pebble, and the white pebble skated over the wet stone, nudging a twig that bumped a floating leaf toward the evaporation rim.

Ripples spread, thin and silvery, until they reached Mica’s shell. Startled, the tortoise shifted; its rough foot pressed the cedar’s edge and stopped further motion before the rolling objects could reach the shaded half of the puddle. The leaf, now sliding over a glassy sheet only millimetres deep, carried a lace of sediment like fine embroidery. Glen pinched the leaf between two fingers, and he kept holding the trembling fragment above the shrinking, shining rim.

波紋薄而銀亮地擴散，直到碰到米卡的龜殼。受到驚動，烏龜挪動一下；它粗糙的腳踩住杉木邊緣，阻止更多物體滾向有陰影的半邊水坑。那葉片現在在僅剩數毫米深的鏡面水層上滑行，帶著細緻如刺繡的沉積物花紋。格倫用兩指夾住葉片，他保持抓著那顫動的碎片，懸在逐漸縮小、亮閃閃的水邊之上。
