Most shelves stood in perfect rows, but one low rolling step-stool lay sideways across the cooking aisle and blocked half the path. Kay paused beside it with her companion, Ella; they had come for a tall, amber-spined cookbook on traditional cuisine so they could prepare dishes for the town’s annual festival. The clock above the catalog terminal ticked toward the thirty-minute warning. Kay bent, gripped the stool, and tried to slide it aside, yet its rubber ring held the carpet like dry glue. If the stool had been lighter, sliding it aside would have taken a second. She straightened, shoulders tight, and tried squeezing past, but the gap pinched at her backpack and forced her back.

A shelving cart creaked nearby, and overhead lamps in the far wing dimmed as staff began closing distant sections. Ella pointed up: the cookbook sat two tiers higher than eye level. Another attempt to budge the stool failed, yet Kay noticed the very weight that trapped it also kept it perfectly still. She turned its curved top toward the shelf, planted one foot, then the other, adjusting her balance until both knees brushed the warm wood. The stool did not roll; its stubborn grip now offered steady footing. From this new angle she could lift the large book, though she had to lean sideways when an unexpected stack of atlases blocked the spine. A slow tug freed it, and the volume slid free with a hush of paper. They hurried to the reading table, copied the needed pages to enhance the experience of cooking, and slipped the book into the return cart as the fifteen-minute announcement echoed.

On their way out, Kay glanced back at the cooking aisle. The step-stool that had been wedged sideways now lay straight against the shelf’s edge.
