When the kiln door clicked open behind the wall, a puff of smoky, sweet vapour floated in, coating his palate like a slow lullaby. If the fan had paused earlier, he would have caught the faint vibration from the cup, but the moment had already passed.

On his way back for new bubble-wrap, he found the same pale cup now resting beside the mallet; Luke must have returned it without comment. The fan had just fallen quiet. Dante raised the cup again, this time angling its open mouth toward the cooler aisle where an herbal, peppery draught slid along the floor. A gentler tap with the wooden dowel released a clear, ringing ping that hung like the first bright note of an unseen orchestra. At the same hour, beyond the kiln doorway, Silas lifted another cooling cup, and a single echoing ring joined the mineral air before the fan started up again.
