English 原文
"Catch the towels," Erik called.
Idris lifted the damp bundle from the washer drum, and warm steam carrying a sugary-soap smell wrapped around his face. The rotating glass still turned, its foamy whirl flashing a brief spectrum of pink, mint, and lemon under the ceiling lights. He crossed the tile toward the dryer bank, breathing the cottony scent that flowed from nearby vents. Erik held the door of the only free dryer, already silvery with moisture, like an overture announcing the next task. Idris pushed the heavy beach towels inside, added a sachet that smelled of fresh pine, and felt pleased when the drum looked balanced.
The sweetness thickened as Idris fetched more laundry. He dropped in a pair of jeans that gave off a metallic tang of wet copper, then grabbed a sapphire hoodie still dripping with seawater from yesterday’s trip. When he stuffed the bulky hoodie on top, the pile mounded against the rim, and the door refused to latch. He shoved once more; a quarter slipped from the slot, struck the metal front with a dull clink, and rolled away leaving a faint salty trail of drips. The coin spun across the floor, bumped a chair leg, and the chair nudged the wire lost-sock basket. One striped sock tipped over the rim and slid into the narrow cove between washer and wall, the small chain of motion dwindling but not yet still. A quiet rustle of discontent passed along two waiting customers as the dryer display stayed dark.
Idris had already loaded three layers, yet the jam told him one layer too many sat inside. He tugged the sapphire hoodie back out; cool sea-air odor burst free as water dropped onto his shoes. The remaining towels and jeans sagged lower, and the door closed with a soft hush. A moment later the drum began to turn, exhaling heated air that smelled like sun-dried cotton. Behind him, Erik scooped up the wandering quarter before it reached a floor drain. At the same hour across the street, a bakery worker pulled trays from an oven, and a metal trolley rolled along the pavement toward the corner.
