Noise in the Silent Dryer-

English 原文
The blow-dryer handle felt ribbed against Idris’s damp palms, and its hollow body echoed faintly when Winona’s knuckle brushed the cool metal nozzle. Around them, overlapping rhythms floated through the styling tool drawer corner: a basin tap dripped in three-beat pattern, the ceiling fan ticked once each slow rotation, and another dryer on the far station kept a steady hiss that merged with a softer rattle from the product shelf labels. Outside the glass door, traffic rolled by with a low, even murmur that belonged to a placid evening; inside, the only free dryer stood between the two friends, its cord twisting across tiles where earlier clippings crackled under shoes. A single beam from the vanity bulbs struck the lint screen, revealing grey dust packed tight—an object that looked ready yet stayed silent.
During the initial phase of their silent examination, Idris thumbed the switch; no whirr followed, only the faint squeak of the trigger returning. Winona eased the plug from the socket and turned it, checking its orientation while the cord scraped over the chair’s metal foot. The plug still refused to bring life, so she crouched and found that the cable had been pressed flat under the chair base; the weight had prevented any power from reaching the handle. Together they tipped the chair just enough for Idris to tug the cord free—cloth cape snaps rustled overhead, and a brief cheer rose from another basin as water stopped mid-splash.
The dryer blinked awake at last, fan blades spinning with a rising pitch. Idris aimed the nozzle toward his fringe; warm air drummed against strands before he passed the tool to Winona, whose hair still dripped faintly. She tilted the barrel and a dull pop announced a clump of lint loosening; the freed fluff landed on the tray with a soft sigh, and a scent of jasmine drifted out through the vent. While she smoothed her hair, a foil packet of shampoo lifted on the hot draft, glided in a lazy arc, and Winona caught the tiny gift before tucking it beside the combs.
