A thin film had been formed by earlier mixes along the tray rim, leaving the plastic slightly gritty to touch. He dipped the stick into yellow; the thick pool lowered slightly, and a cold droplet clung to the wood. One bead of blue followed, sliding down the groove, and a streak of green began to ascend through the mixture. That swirl measured barely half the needed volume, leaving a tiny quandary about how to reach the brim. He set the sticky stick on the newspaper, where fibres started to unravel under the damp paint.

For the second attempt, Emil rinsed the stick in the wash cup, yet the cloudy water left a faint brown tint. He stirred more blue into yellow, and another cool ribbon formed, adding roughly a quarter of the required height. The combined layers sparkled where tiny bubbles caught the overhead light, each bubble holding a crystal sheen before bursting. Still short, he leaned forward, and his elbow nudged the tall roll of paper towels standing like a fragile pinnacle. The roll toppled, bumped the resting stick, and the stick flipped across the tray, drumming against all three primary wells. A fat drop jolted free, skipped the rim, and landed in the half-filled green, which overflowed into the target well. Paint raced along slick plastic channels, yet Emil blocked the run with his palm and slid a towel underneath. The sudden flood lifted the level in the mixing well; green rose to the brim and stopped, silently completing the measure.

He breathed out, lifted the tray carefully, and carried the newly full green toward the test strip at the table’s far end. A quick dab showed the shade leaned blue under the warm light, yet the volume stayed perfect, so he let it stand. Returning, he righted the toppled towel roll and wiped stray droplets before they could seep farther into the newspaper’s fibres. The blue well that had been clear now swirled with a purple ribbon, evidence of the chain that had saved the mix. Inside that tinted pool, the craft stick from the first tap drifted in slow circles toward the scuffed plastic wall.
