Condensation had gathered on the kitchen window when a puff-breasted sparrow landed beside the toaster, its tiny claws ticking on the chrome roof. The wall clock issued a steady tock, and the kettle’s body hummed like a low violin note warming up. Mae’s elbow brushed an array of jam jars lined against the cereal box; their glass bodies rang softly. One lid had been sealed hard by dried fruit and refused her first attempt. Inside the slots, the toaster’s orange lattice crackled. The sudden metallic pop sent the bird skittering three steps along the counter, feathers rustling against a spoon handle. Mae steadied the toast with one hand, gripped a cloth with the other, and articulated a slow, firm twist around the stubborn lid. Sugar crystals grated, the seal broke, and the jar opened. The victory, however, nudged the cereal box forward, its cardboard structure giving a hollow thud against the slick milk jug.

The blow tilted the jug just enough for the base to leave its watery ring and glide. Glass hissed across the damp surface; spoons clinked inside their ceramic pot as it shifted with the jug’s weight. A pale thread of milk spilled, pattering on the counter and pooling in a shape like a four-leaf clover near the bird’s toes. Mae caught the neck in time, but the effort squeezed the open jam jar between her wrist and the cereal box. Sticky berries sloshed over the rim with a plop, freckling the toast. If she twisted any faster, more milk would splash across the plates. She paused, breathed through parted lips, then slid the smallest plate under the jug to anchor it against the wet patch. The plate stack now sat uneven, edges grating each time the clock ticked, yet the milk stayed steady and the jam remained reachable. Mae flicked one crumb toward the waiting sparrow while the kettle kept its gentle hum.
