Granular sand rasped beneath Paul’s glove as he pushed a low wooden board toward the cloudy ice patch. The board carried a bright vegetable platter, and the sharp scent of raw carrot mixed with the mild sweetness of cucumber skins, hinting at mealtime only minutes away. Cold air stung his nose with a metallic tang, while earthy dampness rose from the stone border. He aimed to slide, reach the far bank, and set the food on a sun-warmed bench. One shuffle forward, his boot sole struck the frozen-leaf bump embedded near the rim. A sour crackle cut the air; the jolt jerked the platter, and a cube of beet bounced free. Paul tried to chip the leaf loose with his heel, yet the rough nub held fast, its trapped tannin smell rising faintly through whitening meltwater.

Hana trod onto the edge ice, the faint vinegar-sharp aroma of pickled peppers travelling with her lunch bag. She had hoped to cross together, but her first step punched through thinning film, soaking her sock with icy water that smelled like old iron pipes. She hobbled back to the warm patch, rubbed her foot, then used steady diligence to scoop up a handful of gritty sand. Returning, she sprinkled the grains where the film looked glassy, their dusty taste almost imagined on the tongue. The sand slowed her stance, yet the stubborn leaf bump still barred a clean glide. While they paused, a thin layer of meltwater spread across the centre, giving off a fresh mineral smell and promising even faster movement.

Paul studied the bump again; its wiry edges gave off an almost tea-like aroma. That same roughness that had tripped him could grip rubber. He placed the board on the ice, positioned his boot over the leaf, and pressed. The bump anchored his foot like a silent brake, letting him push the platter forward while Hana steadied its far side. The board skimmed over the slick surface, slowed by the bump’s drag, and stopped exactly against the far stone. A sudden gust whisked away the faint steam from their thermos, but the platter stayed level. On the nearby fence, a grey squirrel sniffed the mingled carrot and pepper scents, then scurried along the rail toward a patch of dropped acorns.
