Sara jerked her hand away, and the plank dipped toward the scuffed landing zone, shaking sand into the pooled shadow. A narrow shaft of light glared along the wooden surface, outlining the tiny beetle as a crisp silhouette. The fulcrum squeaked, and their uneven weight sent Eve upward until her shoes hovered above a bar of brightness. Below, a dark chip of basalt lay near the rubber bumper, catching stray gleam like cooled glass. Eve tipped her head, following the beetle’s slow climb toward that stony island before the plank swung again. A parent watched from the nearby bench, a tin whistle—the playground instrument—glinting where light struck its metal curve.

The high end felt rarefied in the noon glare, and Eve leaned forward, trying to bring the plank level. Yet the balance had been spoiled by Sara’s backpack, wedged behind her like an unseen load. She slid the bag toward the fulcrum centre, but the motion overshot, and the seesaw swung, thudding against the far bumper. Grains of sand lost cohesion, skittering across the plank and making Sara’s seat unexpectedly slippery. Sara adjusted, choosing to inch closer to the pivot rather than abandon the ride, while Eve stayed perched on the tip. The sudden tilt lifted the glossy shape toward the glare, exposing tiny chips along its back. A gentle tap from Eve’s finger made the object spin, and the truth showed in the dull interior. It was no insect at all, only playground debris shaped by time and pressure, masquerading under the sharp daytime shadow. They exchanged a quick grin, their tiny discovery adding nothing but a flicker of shared euphoria above the squeaky axis. If the plank stayed still, the ride would end quickly, so they kept experimenting with fresh positions. At the same hour, near the swings, Ronan jogged past the sandbox, and a different beetle darted beneath his moving shoe. Ronan stepped aside and lifted the shoe, watching the living insect hurry along the bright edge of the rubber surface.
