English 原文
Warm pine dust mixed with a nut-like thread of linseed oil drifted beneath the patio roof. Petra braced her hips against the cool metal bench, feeling the anti-slip mat grip the soles of her shoes while she drew a coarse strip of sandpaper across the clamped block. Each pull rasped through her arms and left a growing warmth in her palms. Beside the vice, Vera swept curls of shavings toward the garden where a faded canvas hammock swayed lazily. A plush rabbit leaned against the hammock’s low post, its stitched paws seeming to cuddle the wood. Serenity lay over the yard, and even the vice’s short metallic clink faded quickly into the open air.
After two grit changes, the surface showed a honey glow, so Petra reached for the finest strip. Halfway through the first pass, a small winged insect landed on the block. Her hand jerked; the paper snagged on the sharp corner and tore in a jagged line. The sudden slip pushed her wrist sideways, carving a diagonal gouge that bit through the fresh smoothness like a crooked scratch. She had already tightened the clamp, and the block could not turn away. If she had pressed harder, the paper would have crumbled again, leaving an even rougher scar. For a moment, the steady rhythm that guided her strokes broke, and the afternoon shade crept farther across the unsanded edges.
Petra rolled the torn remnant into a narrow pad, shifted her stance, and lowered her elbows so her shoulders lined square with the grain. Short, light sweeps moved only from the elbow, not the whole arm, letting the pad skim the high ridges without deepening the wound. Gradually the diagonal softened until fingertip glides met no sharp ridge. She stopped, brushed away the dust, and loosened the vice just enough to lift the block by its cool, unsanded ends. On the touch-test shelf, faint crossing lines still caught the light at one corner, marking the spot where the insect had landed.
