Where the Mallet Disappeared-

English 原文
Oscar slid one bare foot along the cracked top of the narrow bank, dry crumbs of earth breaking under his heel while the other foot still cooled in the paddy water. Rosa approached from the tool rest post, the seedling tray balanced on her hip, her free hand steadying the bundled greens that huddled together like a tiny forest. Both glanced at the single maple-handled mallet dangling from its loop; Oscar needed it to jolt a swollen sluice plank, whereas Rosa planned to tap slim bamboo markers beside her newest row. The mallet had been polished smooth by years of wet palms, and the groove beside it was already worn glossy. A deep croak burst from the far paddy; another frog answered in a higher octave, wrinkles spreading across the warm surface between their plots. Oscar crouched beside the gate to test the plank’s grip, and a wet suck pulled at his toes through the mud.
Rosa reached the post first, yet she paused and lifted the mallet only halfway, watching Oscar’s foot slide sideways as the bank darkened under a fresh trickle. If Oscar had kept moving, their shoulders would have collided above the water, so he froze and nodded at the waiting tool. She stepped back one pace and lowered the tray until the roots could cradle a sip from the cooler layer. Just then the mallet slipped from her damp grip, bounced once, and rolled off the edge with a soft plop, disappearing into the cloudy water. The surprise left both laughing in short breaths. Without the mallet, Oscar braced both thumbs against the plank and rocked his weight; the swollen wood yielded a finger’s breadth. Rosa pressed each stake with the heel of her sandal, working slowly but firmly until every leaning seedling stood upright. When they finally straightened, faint thumb-grooves lined the sluice plank, and shallow heel prints dented the soft bank where Rosa had worked.
