The rice landscape, a quilt of rectangular mirrors, showed a neat aesthetic from afar, yet close inspection revealed deterioration: hairline leaks, slumping corners, and seedling rows tilted where the bottom sloped. Beneath them the bank behaved like a dynamic structure—every press of weight bent it slightly, water whispering through unseen pores. Dragonflies zipped past their calves, and a glossy green frog watched from a seedling stem, throat pulsing.

Harriet scooped a fistful of mud from the barrel, the mass cool and grainy in her palm, then pressed it into the crack with slow, circling thumbs. Alma reached for the next portion, but her angle meant twisting her torso; if she leaned too far, the slick sidewall would send her ankle into the paddy. Harriet noticed the overlap, shifted back, and tilted the barrel toward Alma without a word. Alma had already patched two smaller holes, yet water still lapped higher on her side—evidence that the neighbouring plot kept seeping through. The last row of seedlings had been planted before sunrise, and their blades now bent under the rising level; a sudden rush could submerge them. Alma knelt, elbows sinking into cool sludge, and pressed lower on the bank to thin the flow. If either of them slipped now, the barrel would roll, and precious mud would scatter into the pool.

A splash broke their rhythm: the frog sprang toward the barrel’s rim, landing with a wet slap that rocked the container. Mud swayed inside, heavy enough to tilt the vessel toward the water. Harriet’s knuckles whitened around the top edge, while Alma curved her forearm under the base, shoulders tensing against the unexpected weight shift. The frog, untroubled, blinked once and leapt back into the paddy, leaving concentric ripples racing outward. Water from the barrel’s lip dribbled onto Alma’s wrist as both friends steadied their grip; Alma kept pressing upward, her arms still braced beneath the wobbling load.
