The Footprint That Vanished in the Mist-

English 原文
Cool moisture clung to Oscar’s palm as he skimmed the teak slats; a muddy footprint lay in the narrow recess between two boards, its edges already softening under the hanging mist. Amber light from the late evening sun slipped through orchid leaves and spread golden flecks across a clay jug balanced on the bench. The mark curved strangely, a clumsy metaphor for a flower missing one petal, and Stella bent beside him, tracing its outline without speaking. Above them, the ventilation chain trembled once, and a quiet drip tapped the jug’s rim. Orchid roots dangled like pale ribbons, resilient against each breath of damp air, yet one mount hung lower than the rest and skimmed the forming puddle.
Oscar steadied the jug under a copper spout, letting water gather while Stella stepped through the iron door toward the cactus room to photograph the sharp spine shadows. The hinges groaned, then silence followed except for gravel crunching beyond the frame. A single droplet slid from the open doorway and vanished in the humid layer near the floor. Moments later a rattling thud sounded: a terracotta pot had rolled off a bench inside the arid room. Oscar set the half-filled jug aside and hurried after the noise. Dry air bit at his nostrils; gravel pricked the soles of his shoes. Stella straightened a barrel cactus already righted by its own weight, and together they nudged the pot back onto the slats before returning through the door they had left ajar.
In their short absence, the mist system had launched an extra cycle. Clouds now billowed waist-high, and droplets clung to every orchid root like tiny beads of glass. A glimmering pool spread where the footprint once showed, hiding its shape completely. Oscar lifted the coil of green twine from the oak bench, looped it around the lowest orchid mount, and began drawing the plant upward, careful not to scrape the glass while he kept tightening the twine around the resilient stem.
