Sunline across the Green Bucket-

English 原文
York dragged the foam roller upward across brick number eight, leaving a cool, cucumber-scented band of green that darkened the musky stone. Chalk dust floated around his knees like pale pepper; each breath tasted dry and mineral. A neighbour, Nell, rolled blue in the adjoining square, while a terrier dozed beside the supply tarp, nose twitching at the vinegar-sharp odour rising from the open paint lids. York had planned to cover every corner of his square before the sun reached it. The green bucket still felt heavy, and the rough wall showed good resolution where the first strokes met the chalk grid. He had already rubbed away two stray lines with his palm, the taste of chalk lingering on his tongue, and confidence carried him across the lower bricks.
Minutes later, the terrier sprang up, chased a drifting flake of dried paint, and bumped the tarp. The jolt tilted the green bucket; a wave splashed out, thinning the supply and releasing a stronger, plasticky smell. Nell paused, needing the same colour for her tree leaves. Their shared glance formed an impasse without a word spoken. York lifted the bucket—its weight had halved—and a leathery skin of half-dried paint floated inside. He tried to leverage the loose skin out with a stir stick, but more flakes broke free and drifted like tiny islands. The drying line of sunlight now cut straight through the middle of his square; the upper half had already brightened to a lighter, genuine mint. Faced with that clear quandary, he trimmed his aim. Instead of repainting the whole block, he smoothed the lower bricks only, blending fresh strokes into the shadowed mortar while the upper edge remained patchy. When the roller finally squeaked empty, a thin scent of warm brick overpowered the fading acrylic, and the terrier’s wagging tail brushed a little chalk into the air once more.
