English 原文
Chain links rattled against brass as the stall’s hanging scale rocked in the light breeze. Trent braced a knee against the wooden counter, the grain scraping his jeans while three velvet-skinned peaches pressed together inside his elbow. Beside him, Lily balanced on the balls of her feet, drawing a clamshell of strawberries from the cooled tray; the cold plastic tingled against her fingertips and a fog of sweetness rose toward her face. Only two paper bags remained on the narrow shelf near the scale, and both shoppers tracked them with quick glances. Trent wanted a home-ripe taste tonight; Lily aimed to carry berries intact for her grandmother. The vendor lifted the scale away, explaining that the inner circuit spring had slipped, then vanished behind the shade section to fix it. Shoulders set, Trent shifted weight from heel to heel to keep sticky juice from dripping, while Lily rotated the clamshell, testing each angle for hidden mould. The surrounding crates whispered of late-summer harvest—pears still firm, plums edging toward softness—yet time tugged at every fruit.
Breeze funnelled through the neighbouring stall gap, flipping a cardboard price sign so it slapped Trent’s wrist; the jolt loosened one peach. Lily bent low, forearms tense, and caught the fruit before it thudded into the straw. The vendor returned, hanging the scale again; its beam had been polished smooth, but the pointer quivered. Morning inventory now claimed the vendor’s attention, so the counter space became theirs alone. Trent lowered his peaches; the pan sank and his shoulders followed the drop. If Lily edged her berries forward, both piles could fit, so she adjusted her stance, hips twisting, and slid the clamshell next to the fruit while Trent steadied the chain. The pointer hovered, then glided back to zero—reading secured. Only one paper bag waited. Lily unfolded it; seams strained yet held. Peaches settled at the base, strawberries perched above, weight evenly shared. She tipped the last, refreshing sip of her nourishing drink onto a cloth, wiping juice from their fingers until the bottle blinked empty. Handles lifted into their joined grip, and the cardboard spindle behind them spun once, bare and silent.
