Steam and the Stray Postcard-

English 原文
Paloma’s sleeve caught warm steam as she raised the brass lever on the spice stall’s sampler pot while Otto approached. Amber sunlight filtered through striped awnings, staining jars of paprika and cumin with copper bands that shifted whenever cloth fluttered. Otto hoped to embark on an afternoon of cooking for visiting kin. The recipe demanded one final spoonful of cinnamon syrup drawn from the recent harvest. By the time Paloma’s cup filled, only a thin caramel thread dripped, leaving Otto’s waiting cup almost dry. He tilted the lever again, but the pot sighed out warm breath instead of liquid. Across the counter, the vendor nodded toward a copper kettle that had been fetched from the shaded pantry behind the stall.
Heat rolled from the kettle’s spout once it met the burner, and a small cloud gathered beneath the ochre-striped awning. Moist air fogged the nearest glass jars, and thin beads slipped downward, greasing the bases just enough to loosen their grip. A squat jar of turmeric edged forward, nudged by nothing more than its own damp skin. It touched a stack of postcard bundles, and the paper slips slid like short leaves across the weighing scale. The blocked dial spun uselessly, so the vendor could not price Paloma’s second order, and the queue behind Otto squeezed closer. Seeing the cause, Paloma folded a spare burlap napkin into a wedge and pressed it under the drifting jar, halting its crawl. Cooler air flowed when a delivery cart rolled past and lifted the awning edge, thinning the steam and stopping further slips. Otto finally received his fresh cup, the cinnamon syrup swirling through boiling water that glowed honey-brown against the ceramic. He walked toward the bench to meet his kin, unaware that one postcard still drifted from the scale toward the gravel lane.
