English 原文

Most of the bench lay in shadow, but six thin threads on the sunlit armrest shone like narrow beams. Emil paused; the threads fanned outward with perfect spacing, every stripe mirrored on either side of a faint centre line, so the growing chevron looked like a tiny road of light. The pattern card had been propped against the backrest, its paper corners kept still by a small notepad whose pages fluttered each time the breeze shifted. A few steps away, Yvette read on a blanket; scissors glared beside her, safely out of Emil’s reach. He pinched the third strand and tied a forward knot. Light bounced off the waxy surface, yet the knot pulled a glass bead darker than midnight into the wrong place. The bead jammed between two brighter threads and bowed the row; a short creak rose from the fibres, and the once-flat pattern bent toward the shadow-edge.

He eased the bead back along the strand, then folded the loose ends over the armrest to keep them still. Three rows now lay straight, yet a gap remained wide enough to show skin when he looped the band around his wrist; the circuit would close only after three more rows. A soft confession escaped as a sharp breath, and he chose to continue rather than undo the work. Row four advanced; each knot landed cleanly, but the tape anchoring the bundle slipped, sliding a bright stripe into glare that hid a twist. Emil pressed the tape down, added row five, and the angled lines began to flatten. One final knot drew the midnight bead into its proper place, and the chevrons snapped into a single bright V. The bracelet ringed his wrist without daylight between edges.

At the same moment, Yvette closed her notepad with a muted thud and lifted a star sticker from the half-used sheet.
