English 原文
"The yellow sponge drips already."
Glen pressed its swollen body above the rinse bucket, and warm water rushed between his fingers toward the flimsy rim. A faint ridge inside the bucket marked the level needed to rinse one side of the plastic chair. Yara balanced beside him, knees bent for stability, watching soap bubbles form a restless dome on the basin. If the sponge slipped, the water would splash across the tiles and soak the dry sponges on the bench. They aimed to reach the ridge with three loads, yet the first squeeze raised the cloudy surface only one finger-width.
Before starting, Glen had upcycled a cut plastic bottle into a funnel lying unused near the staging area. He grabbed it now, timing the squeeze so bubbles subsided first, then guiding the flow directly through the narrow spout. The second load added another finger-width, but the ridge still shone dry at the bucket’s inner wall. Yara switched tools, using the smaller kitchen sponge whose scouring pad had been softened by earlier strokes along cracked tiles. Her grip twisted hard, and a thin trickle ran; together the water finally brushed over the waiting ridge. The bucket shifted, water slapped the sides once, and the chair received its first renewable cascade of rinse. A stray droplet leapt, landing on an orchid pot nearby, where it slid off a glossy green leaf. However, the sudden rinse revealed streaks because the rinse water now mirrored milk, laden with soap too dense to embellish shine.
Glen paused, wrists aching from repeated compression, while Yara tilted the bucket and quietly studied the chalky surface. The rinse had been meant to clear soap, yet its cloudiness promised fresh streaks unless they traded it for tap water. Timing again took charge; they decided to scrub another patch first, delaying the refill until footsteps crossed the drip path. An adult’s steady tread passed, carrying gardening shears, so the children held still, sponges hanging heavy over their bowls there. When silence returned, Glen lifted the funnel again, but the bucket tipped, spilling a stripe across the staging area. Water soaked an unused sponge, and suds crawled over the table edge, dripping onto concrete in irregular silver beads. By the time they steadied the bucket, a pale foamy outline ringed the funnel’s base like wet chalk.
